This island, which owes much of its beauty to architect Andrea Palladio, is acclaimed for its ideal position, its buildings and their complementary materials, and its superb layout and planning. San Giorgio's first church was built in AD790. Two hundred years later, a Benedictine monastery was raised. In 1223, an earthquake destroyed both; the monastery was later rebuilt. The [G 05 / campanile], which appears to pin the island to the lagoon, was constructed in 1792 and the harbor, with its twin lighthouses, was formed between 1808 and 1828.
